“Who would have thought that the movies we see on Saturday night could enlighten our reading of the Gospel on Sunday morning?” As Pauline Books & Media releases the third volume in the Lights, Camera …Faith! A Movie Lectionary series this week (Cycle C readings),  movie lovers and churchgoers alike will bring their faith into dialogue with contemporary culture every week of the common lectionary’s three-year cycle. “Who would have thought that the movies we see on Saturday night could enlighten our reading of the Gospel on Sunday morning?” says Elizabeth Thoman, founder of the Center for Media Literacy. “By introducing serious and respectful conversation between the life of faith and 21st century media culture, Lights, Camera … Faith! provides both a model and a method for a deep and rich media literacy movement among all Christian denominations.”

The complete series pairs over 200 films with the Sunday liturgy’ s Scripture readings. Author Peter Malone, MSC, writes: “Each of the movies has been chosen because it in some way portrays the real-life struggles of people”and connects these struggles to the Christian story.”

In this three-part series by Peter Malone, MSC, and Rose Pacatte, FSP, each Sunday’s readings are seen through the lens of a particular movie that highlights themes or issues emphasized in the Gospel. Practical points for reflection and conversation are proposed, in addition to insightful film analysis.

The series is ideal for use by individuals, homilists, young adult groups, parish discussion groups, film educators, media educators in faith communities and students. Suggestions for specific film clips to use in groups and resources for further reading and research make this a complete and valuable resource.
Actor Peter McNichol (Ally McBeal, Sophie’s Choice, Chicago Hope) wrote the foreword to just released volume Lights,Camera… Faith! A Movie Lectionary, Cycle C.
