AUSTRALIA, October 17, 2003 (theaustralian.news.com.au):  Dennis Shanahan comments for The Australian on poverty as a national issue – “…..Too much of the fight for the poor has become empty rhetoric, envy and malice directed at the rich. Too much of the denial of poverty in Australia is part of a detachment by those people who have regular incomes and property rights from those in real need and the suggestion that people are poor because they smoke, gamble or own a television set.  It’s time the debate on poverty came to some common ground to enable Australia – the Coalition and the Labor Party politically – to address the issue and make lasting inroads into a problem that should not exist (but will) in such a prosperous and lucky nation…..”  READ FURTHER
