The current issue of NUNTIA (of the Congregation of the Mission) contains a brief report on the General Assembly of the Daughters of Charity”The press office of the General Assembly communicated in its first two press releases (22 and 24 May) that, after three years of preparation, 183 Sisters (General Council, Visitatrixes and Delegates), belonging to 78 Provinces distributed in 93 countries, have gathered for the General Assembly of the Daughters of Charity, which is being held at the Motherhouse in Paris from 20 May to 22 June.

“The Assembly hopes to revitalize their “being Daughters of Charity.” This important Assembly will revise the present Constitutions and will elect a new Superioress General. Before officially beginning the Assembly, the Sisters had a spiritual retreat, guided by Fr. Fernando Quintano, Director General.

The General Assembly began on 20 May with the celebration of the Eucharist, presided by the Superior General. At his homily he spoke on the gift of peace from the Risen Jesus. After the Eucharist, the Mother General, Sr. Juana Elizondo, officially opened the Assembly. Afterwards, Fr. Maloney presented a conference entitled “On Eagle’s Wings” in which he treated three aspects: the nature of a Constitution, the tasks of this Assembly, and the future of the Company. On 23 May, the Mother General presented a conference on the evolution of the Company over the last six years (1997-2003), characterized, among other things, by the regrouping and the creation of new provinces and by the erection of new works in order to respond to new calls. At the same time she insisted on some points for the future: the vocation apostolate, fidelity to the charism, solid spiritual life and the international character of the Company.

Fr. Corpus Delgado was invited to the Assembly as Facilitator and Fr. Alberto Vernaschi as Canon lawyer.
