Sister Joan Moriarty DC has just returned from Bucharest where, at the invitation of Health Aid Romania, she led a week long seminar / workshop on Child and Adolescent Development entitled: “Children Today … Adults Tomorrow”. This was sponsored by UNICEF.
BACKGROUND
The Daughters of Charity from the British Province have had an association with Health Aid UK and then Health Aid Romania since the collapse of the Ceausescu’s regime in 1989 and the opening up of Government orphanages – many of which were under funded, understaffed and badly run. Initially Sisters went from the Province to train and support those dedicated Romanian staff trying to raise orphans who were HIV positive. Today these staff are responsible for well-run children’s homes and the DC’s support from Britain by their prayers, donations and in any other ways that they can.
