Monsignor Vicente Bokalič Iglic CM to be Made Cardinal by Pope Francis on December 8

Pope Francis has announced that Monsignor Vicente Bokalič Iglic CM, current Archbishop Primate of Santiago del Estero (Argentina), will be elevated to the rank of cardinal on December 8, 2024, during the celebration of the Feast of the Immaculate Conception at the Vatican. This appointment is a recognition of his pastoral service and dedication to the Church in Argentina.

Born on June 11, 1952, in Buenos Aires, Vicente Bokalič Iglic comes from a family of Slovenian immigrants. He joined the Congregation of the Mission, where he received his religious and priestly formation. He was ordained a priest in 1978 and devoted the early years of his ministry to missionary and pastoral work in various parts of the country.

Throughout his priestly career, Bokalič has held several important roles, including serving as auxiliary bishop of Buenos Aires and later as bishop of the diocese of Santiago del Estero. In 2024, he was appointed by Pope Francis as Archbishop Primate of Santiago del Estero.

The soon-to-be cardinal is known for his closeness to vulnerable communities and his commitment to Gospel values. During his episcopacy, he has worked tirelessly for social justice, the defense of human rights, and the formation of new generations of priests and committed laypeople.

As a cardinal, Monsignor Bokalič will also have the added responsibility of participating in conclaves for the election of future popes, as well as in various commissions and activities that help govern the universal Church.
