Growth of the Missions and Confraternities of Charity

Doubtless happy to escape his obligations toward the de Gondi family, Vincent had agreed to take possession of the parish at Châtillon-les-dombes on 1 August 1617. The de Gondis succeeded in having Vincent return to them for Christmas 1617. At Châtillon, his assistant took over the care of the Confraternity of Charity and was named pastor. Madame de Gondi then freed Vincent from his teaching duties (tutoring her children), and, with other volunteer priests, he gave missions in the villages belonging to the family, in Île-de-France, Champagne and Picardy, where he established the Confraternities of Charity of which Madame de Gondi was the driving force. He would meet many other persons, including the widow Louise de Marillac, who little by little became involved with the Charities.
