Uganda | VMY Settles in a New Country

In a joyous moment for the Vincentian Marian Youth (VMY) Association, 2023 marked the establishment of VMY in Uganda.

Since May 2023, a dedicated group of Eritrean VMY members gathered in the vibrant city of Kampala bringing the spirit of service and compassion to this new chapter. With a number of about 80 members and recently welcomed eight (8) new members, the group is actively participating in VMY formation and apostolate services. Their commitment is evident as they convene twice a week, on Tuesdays and Sundays, to introduce the essence of VMY to new recruits. These gatherings not only foster a sense of unity but also provide a platform for the members to engage in monthly apostolate services at local hospitals and clinics, sharing the Vincentian Charism with the wider community.

The group is so grateful to have the companionship of Sr. Sara, DC, who comes from Eritrea. Additionally, the local parish church has warmly embraced the Eritrean VMY members, creating a nurturing environment that promotes VMY identities and supports their various activities.

Beyond borders, the group maintains strong connections with VMY members in Eritrea and other countries, in neighboring nations like Kenya and Ethiopia, which strongly represent the  solidarity among members of the one big VMY Family.

As news of VMY Uganda’s establishment spreads, we express gratitude to God and Mother Mary for the blessing of the VMY Association, particularly for its newfound presence in Uganda. The hope is that this group will continue to grow, spreading the VMY identity and Vincentian Charism, especially among the youth, to cultivate faithful disciples and servants of Christ, following in the footsteps of Saint Vincent de Paul, who devoted his life to serving those in need. In the spirit of St. Vincent de Paul’s teachings, the VMY members in Uganda echo his words: “The poor are our Lords and masters.”

May the Blessed Virgin Mary continue to guide and accompany the VMY group in Uganda and the beloved VMY Association, which was born from her desire expressed through the apparitions to St. Catherine Laboure in 1830.

“O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to Thee!”
