The Vincentian missionary, Odair Miguel Gonsalves dos Santos, CM., was ordained bishop on December 8, at 7:00 pm, in his hometown of Irati, Paraná (Brazil), in the parish church of St. Michael. The ceremony was presided over by Dom Jaime Spengler, O.F.M., Archbishop of Porto Alegre/RS … he was assisted by José Carlos Chacorowski, C.M., Bishop of Caraguatatuba/SP and Sérgio Arthur Braschi, Bishop of Ponta Grossa/PR.

With regard to the place chosen for his ordination, Irati, his hometown, the future bishop stated: “It has always been my parish. From there I left to study at the seminary and the members of the Congregation of the Mission of the Province of Curitiba have ministered in this parish for 48 years”.

Bishop Odair will assume the post of auxiliary bishop in the archdiocese of Porto Alegre. Last week, he was in the capital of Rio Grande do Sul to meet with the bishops and get to know the reality of the Archdiocese. During his stay in Porto Alegre, he participated in the ordination of four deacons and, during the celebration, received the episcopal cross from the hands of Bishop Dom Jaime.

El padre Odair fue nomìnado por el papa Francisco el 20 de septiembre y recibió la noticia con sorpresa, según una entrevista que concedió a la SSVP Brasil en octubre. “Me estaba preparando para ir a trabajar a la Curia General, en la secretaría como asistente. Siete días antes de partir, el papa Francisco me nombró obispo auxiliar de Porto Alegre. Yo estaba siguiente otro rumbo con mi llegada a Roma y mi trabajo en la Congregación. Mis maletas estaban hechas y mis expectativas habían cambiado. Nunca había pensado en este trabajo como obispo, estaba realizando la preparación para la Curia General”, dijo.

En la misma entrevista, el futuro obispo explicó la importancia y el deseo de trabajar estrechamente con la Familia Vicenciana. “Trabajar con la Familia Vicenciana es esencial, es fundamental, y nuestro Superior General (Tomaž Mavrič) lo promueve mucho. Estamos trabajando, especialmente con los más jóvenes, para romper este paradigma de que sólo debemos trabajar en la parroquia. Aunque trabajemos en la parroquia, tenemos que dar cabida a la Familia Vicenciana allí donde estemos. La parroquia es también una oportunidad para trabajar con las diversas ramas de la Familia Vicenciana. Voy a trabajar como un sacerdote vicenciano, pero como un sacerdote de la Misión, centrado en los retos de hoy”.
