Anecdotes of the Vincentian Family: Ozanam and Law: A Depressing Justice
Ozanam studied Law by his father. He did not like law studies but, to please his father, he received his doctorate. What he really liked were Letters.
Federic practiced Law in Lyon for a short period of time.
He wrote in one of his letters:
In this profession, your client must always be right, while the opponent is always a scoundrel. We must sustain defenses through invective, hyperbole and reticence, that you can witness even in the most respected lawyers. Seeing Justice surrounded by so many lies is for me a cause for indignation. This work depresses me. During the twelve times I litigated during this last time, I have always come back home heartbroken.
Luckily for him, he soon got the position of professor of Foreign Literature at Sorbonne. His Law studies, however, provided him with an interesting culture that was added to his not so small literary and linguistic knowledge.
