About 368 million tons of plastic were produced worldwide in 2019, only 10% of which is currently being recycled and much of which will end up in landfill or pollute oceans, rivers and land. To reduce plastic waste and raise awareness about environmental protection, AIC volunteers in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, decided to begin selling rice straws in their local community. Cooperating with a manufacturer, they sold straws at their parish church after mass, at schools, and to restaurants and street vendors. Since the beginning of the project in September 2019, it has spread to other branches of the Vincentian Family and other provinces of Vietnam. Beneficiaries are not only using rice straws, but have also become more aware of reducing plastic waste. Some, for instance, now bring their own cups and bottles instead of buying juice in plastic cups from street vendors. The profits from sales are used for other AIC projects in Vietnam, supporting people who are homeless, or need support for medical care or education and training.
