Sister Justine Bisqueyburu, D.C. and the Green Scapular
Nine years after the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to St. Catherine Labouré, she appeared to Sister Justine Bisqueyburu, D.C. (1817-1903), in the same convent chapel at Rue du Bac, holding the Immaculate Heart in her hands, and gave her the Green Scapular.
Sr. Justine went on to serve in military hospitals, spending time on the battlefield and in leadership positions. According to The Green Scapular and Its Favors by Fr. Marie Edouard Mott, C.M., “Pope Pius IX, who soon appreciated her valor, often saw her and gave her more than one token of his fatherly kindness. He even sometimes allowed her to accompany him in his walks through his private gardens. Msgr. de Merode, who occupied a superior rank at the Pontifical Court, also held her in the highest esteem. She was very far from taking pride in these favors…” To the end of her life, Sr. Justine maintained silence about the visions of the Blessed Mother, and spoke only with her superior and her spiritual director about them.
Say this short prayer often: “Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us, now and at the hour of our death.”
