The International General Council of the SSVP Claims the National Dialogue and the Urgent Pacification in Nicaragua

The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul (SSVP), through its International General Council (CGI) based in Paris, wishes to state publicly its great concern about the socio-political situation in Nicaragua.

The Central American country has been suffering numerous conflicts for more than 30 days, with more than 50 people dead, many of them students, and hundreds of injured people.

The General Council appeals to political leaders, businessmen, the young, the opposition and all persons of good will to seek dialogue, conciliation and peace; the peace that Our Lord Jesus Christ demands on us in the Gospel of St. John 14, 27 (“I leave you my peace, I give you my peace”).

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul supports and endorses the content of the recent note issued by the Catholic Church through the Conference of Bishops in Nicaragua, calling for immediate national reconciliation and the end of the protests, urging the country to regain the constitutional democratic stability.

In view of the unstable climate lived in Nicaragua currently, the Vincentian conferences have had to suspend the home visits to poor families, as well as the social activities, until normalcy returns to the country. The safety of the assisted persons and of the Vincentians comes first. The SSVP in Nicaragua has 35 Conferences with 500 members.

“The Nicaraguan people are hardworking, trustworthy and tidy, and do not deserve to suffer what is happening. The Vincentians from around the world, we stand in solidarity with the Nicaraguan brothers and pray to God that this terrible situation ends soon and that the problems will be resolved peacefully and democratically”, stressed our brother Renato Lima de Oliveira, 16th President General of the SSVP.

The General Council asks the Vincentian Conferences to pray, at this week’s meeting, a Hail Mary for the national pacification in Nicaragua.
