St. Vincent’s Call to the Ladies of Charity Is Still Heard After 400 Years
Next week the International Association of Charities (AIC), or Ladies of Charity as they are known in the U.S., celebrate 400 years since the foundation of the first group of Charities. On August 23, all 150,000 volunteers in the AIC network will celebrate the foundation of AIC, which 400 years later, continues to be active and full of life.
The gospel call echoed by St. Vincent to the first Ladies of Charity in 1617 continues. Today’s needs are comparable and equally challenging (see the SlideShare presentation, below). Our responses must be empowering and aimed at changing unjust systems. The mission of the Ladies of Charity is to work together against all forms of poverty, especially the poverty of women and children.
