Feasts of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal and St. Catherine Labouré
Today is the Feast of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal and tomorrow is the Feast Day of St. Catherine Labouré.
Brief Reflection
Those who are familiar with the Miraculous Medal Novena will recognize the following prayer:
O Lord, Jesus Christ, who for the accomplishment of Your greatest works, have chosen the weak things of the world, that no flesh may glory in Your sight; and who for a better and more widely diffused belief in the Immaculate Conception of Your Mother, have wished that the Miraculous Medal be manifested to Saint Catherine Labouré, grant we beseech You, that filled with like humility, we may glorify this mystery by word and work. Amen.
A couple of thoughts about the above— first: some may scoff at the Miraculous Medal as something quaint, old fashioned, and of little importance except to the simple or the superstitious. But as we know, God is able to work through the non-intellectual things in this world. The wise and intelligent can be at a disadvantage as far as spiritual understanding is concerned. We are blinded by pride, and dependent on our own accomplishments and abilities. It’s when we feel inadequate or when we “hit rock bottom” that we need a miracle. Only God can help us at that stage. The answered prayers and favors received through the Miraculous Medal can be profound.
Second, God uses the foolish, the weak, the ignorant, the humble. St. Catherine Labouré was a simple, uneducated woman. It is said that she was ridiculed by her schoolmates. She was illiterate. None of that mattered on the night when a shining child awakened her and escorted her to the chapel to meet the Virgin Mary, and from there the Miraculous Medal was born.
When we feel little, powerless, stupid, ill… we get to rely on God and see God’s power at work.

Very true text, and to add, convictions of the world run contrary to true Catholic dogma.
