A new book and mobile app, DoCat —the Catechism of the Catholic social teaching, especially aimed at young people— was introduced on Tuesday July 26 in Krakow, at the beginning of the World Youth Day. The Cardinal Tagle introduced the book saying that “the Pope wants to give us a gift.”

For now, it is only available in English, German and Polish, but soon new languages will be added, including Spanish. This little book (similar to YouCat that was presented at the World Youth Day in Madrid in 2011) is a summary of the main points of the social doctrine of the Church, based on Scripture, the complete Catechism, the YouCat, and the Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church.

Pope Francis has prefaced this work. He has defined the DoCat as a “manual of wisdom, a manual for the street (that) is about the word of God, besides the word of the Church and of many other people. […] It is a very important tool for the daily lives of young people.”

DoCat is organized into twelve chapters, in the same format that YouCat, of questions and answers, and addresses issues of utmost importance to Catholic life such as: God’s plan for the world, the social mission of the Church, the human person, the common good, family, economic and political life or the environment. The volume features full-color photos, a glossary and index, illustrations and quotations from saints, leaders of the Catholic world and business, various activists and other renowned people, including Bruce Willis, the actor.

There is a DoCat digital version that can be downloaded free until the end of World Youth Day, this Sunday 31. Thereafter it will become a paid app.
