Twenty-four women in Surkhet, Nepal recently completed a six-month skill and empowerment training which began in January 2016. This class brings the overall total to 711 women over 31 classes who have competed the training. Ninety-five percent of these women have become income earning members for their families, some of which have upgraded their studies by becoming school teachers and trainers.

They received certificates on June 24 during a cultural program prepared by the trainees. It was the first chance for all of them to be on the stage to present their activities and they did it with great confidence. Trainees enacted a drama on the destruction of forests which is a burning issue in the district.

The present group of 24 women were from four neighboring districts including Surkhet. Most of them were with very little education. One of them had never been to school. Many of them came from broken families and were victims of domestic violence. These women were given training in leadership, anti-trafficking, child abuse, health and sanitation, herbal medicines, legal rights, business, migration, gender equality and personality development. They attended various skill trainings such as tailoring, hand knitting, fabric painting and vegetable cultivation. Towards the end of the training the participants were seen to be wearing clothes tailored by them. They are appreciative of the transformation in their own lives and the family support they have earned and they are grateful for the new life they have received through the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth and Navjyoti Center, Surkhet.
