Towards the Peripheries of Life (10): Nador – Alhucemas

by | Aug 17, 2017 | Disasters and Responses, News

It is dawning again in Alhucemas and we go back again to the daily routine, but the moments, the laughter and the presence of God is renewed. We savour the time, we do not get bored, there is always something to do. It is a blessing for us to see life through these functional diversity kids’ clear eyes, their loving and innocent eyes. In each of their gazes we can find a little bit of God.

We are building the community little by little. Between us and the religious who welcome us in the city, confidence is growing, as well as laughter and advice. We already feel at home, as if we had known each other for a long time. Time goes by and we are aware that our adventure is nearing its end, but we still have many times to enjoy.

In Nador we started the day with an Eucharist with the communities of the area. Today we have to know the camps. On arrival we greet the boss, who allows us to be there and spend some time with people. They ask for some medications. Sister Francisca, who has been working with them for several years, cares overall for the pregnant women and tries to follow up with them and persuade them to go to the gynecologist to have things checked.

In spite of everything, life makes its way through shacks and plastics. Those who live there ask us where we are from, and how Spain is; they only dream of the moment when they step on Spanish soil. We went back shocked that only 20 km from the border life is so different, we have the sensation of having entered deep Africa. We are surrounded and trapped by this land of inequalities, these deserted mountains so full and this continent where the best and the worst of man comes to light.
