Sister Mary William: ‘And I don’t question his taste’

“My nephew says that I work in an alley and give out food to people and talk to drunks.”

Sister Mary William is Irish, outspoken and a Daughter of Charity at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Central Austin.

“We’re a downtown church, so we have many homeless people and people who need assistance. America is just beginning to realize that we have poor people in our country. But part of it is that we’ve become so materialistic that we measure success by material things, and the people who come to use for service have a closeness to God because that is their only strength.

“They don’t see what they don’t have as a failure. They see it as a challenge. And they don’t blame God for what they don’t have. And that’s faith. That’s real faith. They have taught me what it means to be poor of spirit. You know, the first beatitude is: ‘Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.’ The poor teach me what it is to be rich in spirit.
