In recent years in All Hallows College, I have run a short series of films entitled ‘Reel Theology’. Each week in the series, I choose a different movie, offer some thoughts on the theological or spiritual themes in it, give the participants a hand-out for personal reflection or group discussion afterwards, and then we watch the movie.

Last year we ran a second series. We covered the films ‘Whale Rider’, ‘Mistress of Spices’, ‘Gods and Monsters’, ‘La Reine Margot’, ‘The Mission’, ‘The Life of Brian’, ‘Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire’, ‘Amelie’, ‘Her Majesty Mrs. Brown’, ‘The Chorus’, and ‘The Piano’. It is an interesting mixture and, at first sight, perhaps it would be difficult to ‘read’ many of these films as spiritual; they are not the classic ‘religious’ films of our past.
