Entertaining AngelsSeeing with new eyes “Entertaining Angels” the moving saga of a faith not just believed, but lived.

I have seen the Paulist Picture movie of the true story of Dorothy Day a number of times. It has always been very powerful. But I saw it with new eyes thanks to the closing presentation of the 2014 Ladies of Charity USA National Assembly.

Sr. Germaine Price, DC and Jude Shubert carefully selected two 10 minute excerpts from the video featuring Martin Sheen  and Moira Kelly. What made it different was a simple process that  took the 150 Ladies of Charity who viewed it into brief but profound personal reflections and sharing that stunned many people.

Unfortunately it was the kind of process that has to be experienced rather than described.

No doubt many of the Ladies will be happy to know that the DVD can be purchased from Amazon or rented from Netflix or other similar services.

As the Amazon review writes…”Dorothy Day is no saint. She lives hard, makes mistakes, endures the consequences. But the unquenchable fire burning within her cannot be contained. Dorothy wants to make a difference. During the Depression, she vows to house the homeless, feed the hungry, tend the sick. Easily said. Not easily done when her total finances amount to 97 cents in a battered canister. Yet Dorothy persists, walking on frequently stormy waters of faith.

“Popular stars and important themes combine in this compelling true story of the “American Mother Teresa,” filmed by Paulist Pictures (Romero) from a script by ER writer and executive producer John Wells. Moira Kelly plays Day, the impassioned New York journalist who launched the activist newspaper “Catholic Worker” and put the words she wrote into controversial action. Martin Sheen, Melinda Dillon and Brian Keith join Kelly in this moving saga of a faith not just believed, but lived.”

There are a number of study guides available of the story of faith not just believed by lived.
