NAZARETH – Led by their commitment to preserve God’s creation, a group of nuns based near Bardstown has become the state’s second-largest purchaser of an alternative form of energy generated from methane gas in landfills.

Yesterday, on the eve of Earth Day, state officials and power company executives honored the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth for their purchase of the energy, called EnviroWatts.
“It is a priority for us,” said Sister Barbara Flores, a vice president of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth. “We just hope that this small effort will be the beginning of a ripple effect and will make a difference.”
The nuns have agreed to buy 257 units of EnviroWatts each month, about 8 percent of their monthly electricity usage.
Over a year’s time, that purchase will be equivalent to 385 acres of trees or 308,400 pounds of coal, according to the state Environmental and Public Protection Cabinet.
