Sr. Mary Beth Kubera, DC writes…”We had the 2013 Vincentian Lay Missionary Orientation at DePaul University on Thursday, June 27-Saturday, June 29. Jessica Werner, VLM Director, facilitated the entire orientation.
The program included a special session for the coordinators of each group as well as presentation to the full group on the history of VLM USA, the Vincentian charism and spirituality, community life, ministry, cross cultural missionary work, and simple living.
Prayer experiences, information on each site, and apostolic reflections were prepared and presented by the 2013 Coordinators and VLM alumnae.
On Friday evening, the Daughters of Charity on Whipple Street hosted the group for a pizza supper. Sister Catherine Madigan and Sister Sharon Horace shared their insights on what it means to be a missionary in Africa. Father Daniel Hasso, C.M. concelebrated a missioning mass on the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul with Father Hugh O’Donnell’s group of 18 Chinese priests.
The first group of four Vincentian Lay Missionaries left for Bahir Dar, Ethiopia, on Saturday, June 29.
On August 1, the rest of the group will travel to Kenya: 3 to Kiio, 4 to Chepnyal, 4 to Kitale.
