On Good Friday, the Christian day of reflection, Compass meets a group of religious sisters who, despite their age, are still actively involved in addressing some of Australia’s major social problems. For 150 years the Sisters Of Charity have engaged in welfare, hospital and education work in Australia. Along the way they have been living exponents of Christian social action amid an increasingly secularised society.
St Vincent’s Outreach, which is run by the Sisters, operates the only 24-hour crisis accommodation for victims of domestic violence in the Liverpool area of western Sydney, as well as early prevention programs to support isolated mothers and children. The Sisters live up to their reputation as one of the most theologically progressive factions within the Catholic Church and use some unconventional fundraising methods practically.
