College of Mount St. Joseph is no more. That is to say, it’s changing its name.
In doing so it becomes the newest university sponsored by a member of the the Vincentian Family.
Starting on July 1, 2014, the institution will be renamed Mount St. Joseph University, the board of trustees announced Wednesday afternoon.
The name change is meant to reflect the school’s expanding academic offerings, including an increased number of graduate programs for masters and doctorate degrees, as well as new online programs.
“The cornerstone upon which the Mount has been built will remain the same,” board Chairman Ken Stecher said in a news release.
“As it has for the past 93 years, the Mount will remain a sponsored ministry of the Sisters of Charity and with that, will continue its mission of providing a high quality liberal arts education with professional programs distinguished by personal attention, small classes and a close community.”
The sponsoring Sisters of Charity have blessed the transition.
“In the name of the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati, I congratulate the Mount as it becomes Mount St. Joseph University,” Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati President Sr. Joan Cook said in a news release.
“I pray that our patron, St. Joseph, will continue to guide all the members of the Mount community as they embark on this new venture while continuing the tradition of excellence in education.”
The name change comes in reaction to changes made by the school’s Vision 2020, which aims to focus on improving academics, the student experience and career readiness.
“Vision2020 gives us a focus and measureable goals,” Mount St. Joseph PresidentTony Aretz said.
