In 2012, Fr. G. Gregory Gay, C.M., Superior General of the Congregation of the Mission, responded to the needs of the modern era, the Church, and the Vincentian community by forming theVincentian Family Commission on Interreligious Dialogue with Islam. This Commission was the result of ongoing efforts by members of the Vincentian Family to meet and dialogue on the need for a fuller understanding of Islam, and to assist Vincentians, Daughters of Charity, and Vincentian Family members who live and minister in predominantly Muslin countries.
The Commission held its initial organizational meeting at the General Curia of the Congregation of the Mission in Rome in October 2012. At the end of the meeting, the Commission agreed upon several main objectives, including:
- to propose and organize forums and symposiums of the Vincentian Family to engage in and develop theological and spiritual reflection on dialogue with Islam;
- to help in developing ongoing formation programs at different levels (e.g., at continental levels) for members of the Vincentian Family, with regard to dialogue and working together with people from other faith, namely Muslims;
- To be a source of support and accompaniment for Vincentians and Daughters of Charity working in predominantly Muslim countries so they do not feel alone in their mission.
