DR. Michael Thio, President General, visited Hong Kong (Special Administrative Region of China) on 23- 24 March 2012 and met up with Maurice Yeung, President, Central Council, SSVP Hong Kong (Special Administrative Region of China), and members of his Central Council. The President General held wide-ranging talks with the members covering their varied services to the poor including their China activities and the management of a Nursery School catering also to poor children. They are also looking into the setting up of new conferences to serve more poor and needy.
Dr. Michael Thio shared with them CGI’s global activities and the recent accreditation by the United Nations of our UN-NGO Special Consultative Status as a member of the Economic & Social Council(ECOSOC). HK SSVP is a member of the Concordat.
Dr. Michael Thio paid a courtesy call on John Cardinal Tong, Bishop of Hong Kong. The latter was elevated to the post of Cardinal by the Holy Father in February this year.
John Cardinal Tong has been very supportive of SSVP in Hong Kong and his VicarGeneral Msgr Dominic Chan is the Spiritual Advisor to the Central Council , SSVP Hong Kong. John Lee, Vice-President International Structure, who resides in Hong Kong, and Thomas Tan, ITVP for East Asia & Oceania,joined the meetings.
