Since 1883 Mount Saint Vincent Home for Children has welcomed over 18,000 Colorado kids into its open arms. Originally an orphanage and still run by the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth who founded it, this ever-refreshed place celebrates its 129th birthday on Feb. 15th. It’s now a home and school for abused and neglected children; there’s room for 44 children to live at the home, and another 50 kids attend the preschools and K-8 school on campus.
A storied history, a compelling story today: Mount Saint Vincent Home. Counties, school districts and families entrust children who have experienced trauma early in their lives to the therapists and teachers who staff the home’s programs: three residential cottages for boys and girls ages 5-13; three preschool programs, including a four star rated neighborhood preschool for 3-6 year olds; a K-8 school for children who have a hard time because of their histories and behaviors in regular school; and Aspen House, a group home setting for 8 boys ages 8-18 learning social skills so they can return to their families, a foster family or move out on their own.
The children learn to self-regulate their behaviors so they can be ready to return to a safe, welcoming and healthy home and family. There are programs for the parents and families to learn how to continue the healing environment that Mount Saint Vincent provides. Teachers help transition a child to a neighborhood school by passing on what works best with this particular child to the new teacher. Mount Saint Vincent is child focused, trauma aware and family respectful.
