“A coalition of welfare and community groups, including the St Vincent de Paul Society, has called on the Federal Government to commit to a $2.5 billion stimulus package for the housing sector in the next Budget. Australians for Affordable Housing (AAH), of which the Society is a member organisation, has asked for an increase in rent assistance of up to $25 a week to help alleviate some of the housing stress in the rental market” reports the Vincentian website in Australia.
Dr John Falzon, the Society’s national council chief executive officer, said Australia cannot claim to be “the land of the fair go” as long as it persists in “denying so many of our people the right to housing”. “Over 240,000 households are waiting for public and community housing.
