It has been 150 years since in 1861, at the invitation of Abraham Lincoln, four Daughters of Charity arrived in Washington to found Providence hospital. With a charter signed by the president, the four sisters began what has become the longest continuously operating hospital in Washington, D.C.
Among those attending the Mass were Daughters of Charity Sister Claire Debes, provincial superior for the Emmitsburg Province, and Sister Carol Keehan, a Daughter of Charity who is the president of the Catholic Health Association and former president of Providence Hospital.
