More than 200 members of the DePaul community and friends turned out April 1 to raise over $15,000 for Haiti and celebrate Zafèn’s first anniversary. Zafèn is the onlinemicrofinance program the International Vincentian Family partnered to launch on the 350th anniversary of the deaths of St. Vincent de Paul and St. Louise de Marillac to foster sustainable economic development in Haiti. Because event expenses were kept to a minimum and underwritten, 100 percent of the proceeds went to Haiti and qualified for a matching program from the Vincentian Family, doubling the impact of the funds raised. \
“The event exceeded our expectations,” says Griselda Garibay, the Zafèn administrator for the Vincentian Family. “In a time of economic hardship in the United States, it’s nice to see people offering the encouragement they would like to receive.”
