“The most successful exhibit in the 18 years I’ve been here.” Ellis Island curator of the LCWR exhibit Women & Spirit, Catholic Sisters in America. The Federation Connections Committee arranged for  the Sisters of Charity of New York, Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth, New Jersey, Sisters of Charity – Halifax, and the Daughters of Charity, Albany to collectively celebrate this heritage.

The purpose for gathering on this sunny October morning was to see the LCWR exhibit Women & Spirit, Catholic Sisters in America on Ellis Island. Some traveled by bus, others by car, subway or the Staten Island Ferry to board the ferry to Ellis Island. The excitement and anticipation was palpable.  No matter where you looked, someone was proudly wearing the green and white Elizabeth Seton Bicentennial scarf.

The exhibit area was filled to capacity with Sisters, Associates and friends from the tri-state area and Pennsylvania when the Ellis Island curator stopped by with the exhibit cards. It was heart-warming to hear his comment and to realize that the impact of the exhibit was mirrored in the original impact of the Sisters’ service to a growing country.

… The day ended with a Mass at the Seton Shrine celebrated by Fr. Peter K. Meehan. As we came off the ferry and walked through Battery Park towards the Shrine, we came across an amazing spectacle in New York City: a wild turkey. It was certainly out of place but quite appropriate for on this day we knew we had so many reason to be thankful.
