August is winter in Australia and the St Vincent de Paul Society has run out of basic bedding and household furniture to give to struggling families after one of the busiest winters to hit charities.
In the latest sign of the rise in West Australians living below the poverty line, St Vinnies gave away more than 200 beds and mattresses last month to needy Perth households. As a result of the unprecedented demand, the charity’s Osborne Park depot is now almost bare.
“We had a fantastic response to our last plea for donations, meaning those who called on the society for help got the necessities they needed,†depot general manager Gavin Dempster said.
“But once again we are asking people to donate their unwanted mattresses, bedding, bric-a-brac and clothing to help those in need.â€
