Readers should appreciate that when the description above refers to girls being married before their 18th birthday, it is not talking about marriages occurring at ages 16 or 17 in the US. The term “child bride” is no exaggeration: many of these marriages occur when the girls are 7 or 8 years old, with the girls then leaving home to live with their husbands at puberty. These marriages are “forced”.
