Raise a man’s consciousness to the point where he asks, “Why can a government give away my ocean?” and there begins the revolution.

Although I’m not optimistic that a revolution will be forthcoming any time soon, Aidan’s comment raises an interesting question: Why do we so easily accept that governments have the right or authority to buy and sell, not only the oceans, but all of the natural resources God gifts to us all? Aren’t such actions clearly inconsistent with the principle of the universal destination of goods? Gaudium et Spes reminds us that “God destined the earth and all it contains for all men and all peoples so that all created things would be shared fairly by all mankind under the guidance of justice tempered by charity.”
