Sr. Martha Walsh, S.C., received the 2007 Sister Mary Lea Mueller Human Service Award from the College of Mount St. Joseph at the reunion convocation in June. This award is given to an alum who has lived out the mission of the College through a life of service to others.

After graduating from the Mount in 1957 with a bachelor’s degree in nursing, Sister Martha joined the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati. She began her nursing career at Good Samaritan Hospital, where she worked as a head nurse, supervisor and assistant director of nursing. She earned a graduate degree and a certificate in nurse-midwifery in the 1970s, after which she traveled to Africa to teach the native women midwifery and child health care.

Sister Martha served on the ethics committees of Good Samaritan Hospital, Mother Margaret Hall and Bayley Place. She has also taken part in several other ethical courses and seminars, such as the Health Care Ethics Institute at the Mount and the United States-El Salvador Third Annual Colloquia on Health Care.

She is currently an advocate for local and national working-poor persons, and serves on the National Board of Catholic Health Initiatives and Bailey Place.
