Announcement from the Sisters of Charity (New York) regarding art exhibit of the creative works of two religious women. Kathleen Aucoin, SC and Elizabeth Terbrock, a Maryknoll SisterTheir work will be featured in “Kinship in Sacred Spaces: An Exhibit” in the Chapel Gallery at Mariandale Retreat Center in Ossining, NY. The show will open on Sunday, March 11 with a reception from 2-4 pm, and will be view through Thursday, March 29.

Kathleen Aucoin, a Sister of Charity of New York, is a sculptress. Examples of her work that will be in the show include:

  • The Invitation [Annunciation of Jesus]
  • Surprised by Joy [The Visitation]
  • St. Francis of Assisi
  • The Dancing Prophet [Hebrew Miriam, sister to Moses and Aaron]
  • Mary of Magdala
  • I Am Always With You [Good Shepherd in the storm]

Of her pieces, Sister Kathleen says they “are all a product of prayer and experience. To me, true sculpture comes from the depth of the artist’s soul. All of my sculptures — as in every sculptor’s work — imbibe the Spirit of the artist’s life and passion. When a person looks at one of my statues, I hope that they are drawn to the God they cannot see, but can feel, experience in the art before them. My sculpture is a result of prayer.”

Sister Kathleen pursues her art in her spare time. She is the Director of Pastoral Care at the Elizabeth Seton Pediatric Center in New York City. You can see examples of her artwork online at www.kathleenaucoin.com

Elizabeth Terbrock, a Maryknoll Sister, will be displaying her paintings, poems and paper collages. Sister Elizabeth sees her art representing “an exploration of sacred spaces. As a poet-artist-contemplative member of a community of missioners, I see Mission as a call to journey to the margins, and beyond — to discover and respond to the God of Love who dwells within the near and distant spaces — in all the well-traveled places, as well as the most hidden ones.”

In addition to being a poet-artist, Sr. Elizabeth is a certified Applied-Poetry Facilitator, a registered nurse, and a Reiki practitioner. She has done integrative work with the expressive arts in both the U.S. and South Korea, and has come to believe in the transformative potential of the arts when used in a context of hope.
