I just arrived back from visiting our Sisters in Jakarta. A violent earthquake occurred on 21st January 2007 and sparked panic in north-eastern Indonesia (Maluku and Sulawesi region). In fear of an impending tsunami the people fled to higher ground but it was a false alarm and they are now returning to their homes.

Two days later, on Tuesday, 23rd January, 150 mm of heavy rain poured down on the Provinces of Jakarta, Banten, and West Java. More than 70.000 houses were flooded. The water level ranged between 10 cm and 5 m.

Sr Anna, Provincial of Indonesia, writes…

“Besides flooding in Jakarta, there was also flooding in Serawai (Western Kalimantan) where we have a local DC community. The heavy flooding, caused by the rising level of the River Serawai, devastated many homes forcing people to become evacuees – some of whom took refuge in our house.
