Gainesville’s first geodesic dome home will double as an outreach center for the homeless for half normal cost.

Rod Rodriguez, the president of the St. Vincent de Paul Catholic outreach organization that is responsible for the home, looked at many different house designs before deciding on the geodesic dome.

The dome shape also gives extra strength to the home, making it hurricane- and tornado-proof.

The building, located at 934 SE Seventh Ave., has been under construction since August. It will house a soup kitchen, clothes bank and a place to shower, said Rodriguez, 56, who will also live in the home.

“About three years ago, I envisioned a place where we could have a permanent office and help the needy,” said Rodriguez, who has been with St. Vincent de Paul for the last four years.

“It will be about half the cost of what a house this size would normally cost,”
