The Catholic Church in southern Queensland has welcomed the Federal Government’s decision to withdraw its controversial migration Bill to extend offshore processing.
The Prime Minister announced the Government is not going ahead with the Bill, which would have seen all people arriving by boat illegally being processed offshore in places like Nauru.

The Catholic Social Justice Commission’s Dr Mark Copland says coalition Senators who moved to block the bill should be proud.

“The Prime Minister is talking about that this Bill was about protecting Australian people”, he said.

“I mean, at the moment the world is worried about threats from people in planes and the people coming in boats need protection, we don’t need protection from people coming in boats”.

“The majority of people who come on boats are who they say they are and that is real people needing protection, refugees”.
