SVDP USA President Joe Flanagan writes… I am delighted to make the following, eagerly-awaited announcement: Bishop John Michael Quinn of Detroit has agreed to serve as the new Episcopal Advisor of the National Council of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul.Bishop Quinn was installed as the 23rd auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Detroit in 2004. From 1990 to 2003, he served as director of the Education Department of the Archdiocese of Detroit. Bishop Quinn is the Cardinal’s delegate to Sacred Heart Major Seminary, Detroit. In 1990, he was designated a Prelate of Honor with the title of Monsignor by His Holiness Pope John Paul II.
Earlier in his career, Bishop Quinn served as associate pastor and pastor, and as associate director for justice and peace and for religious education of the Archdiocese of Detroit. He holds a B.A. in philosophy from Sacred Heart Seminary, Detroit; a Master of Divinity from St. John’s Provincial Seminary, Plymouth; and Masters in both religious studies and systemic theology from the University of Detroit/Mercy. He has also done graduate work in religious studies at the Catholic University of America, Washington, DC. A native of Detroit, Bishop Quinn was ordained to the priesthood in 1972.
