He is drawing quite a bit of attention to the understanding of poverty in the US. His work has been praied by people like Helen Prejean, major newspaper reviewers and academics.

A graduate of Duke University, DeParle won a George Polk Award in 1999 for his reporting on the welfare system and was a two-time finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. His book, American Dream: Three Women, Ten Kids, and a Drive to End Welfare was selected as a New York Times notable book for the year 2004.
