SYDNEY, January 12, 2005 (catholicweekly.com.au): The lead story in The Catholic Weekly this week focuses on mental health – As many as 30 per cent of people who receive help from the Society of St Vincent de Paul have mental health problems. This is especially so in the Society’s 35 homeless services across the State which see “the majority of their clients seeking assistance because of mental health problems”, says John Picot, operations executive for Vinnies in NSW and the ACT.

“The Society’s crisis accommodation services have become like our prisons, an out of sight, out of mind solution to the shortage of adequate mental health services,” he said. “Of the Society’s 9000 members who discreetly visit people in need in their homes across NSW and the ACT, three out of four come into contact with clients who have metal health problems.
