BENDIGO VICTORIA, January 3, 2005 (bendigo.yourguide.com.a): Mal Nolan has seen a lot of Bendigo Prison during the past 20 years – but he is not a criminal. Since 1985 the St Vincent de Paul volunteer has been visiting the jail once a fortnight, to spend time with the inmates as part of the society’s prison program.
But now, the closure of the prison means an end to Mr Nolan’s dedicated service. He has seen many come through the prison system, and has seen it change from a general prison to today’s drug and alcohol rehabilitation centre. “The biggest change in the past 10 years has been the drug and alcohol program,” he said.
