Hurricane Stan was not very strong, ranging between category 1 and a tropical storm. But even if a weak cyclone arrives in a poor zone it can cause hundreds of deaths, as has happened on this occasion. The hurricane has caused, at least, 250 deaths in Central America (Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Honduras) and Mexico.

We have received this communication from Fr. José Francisco Ramos, C.M., Visitor of Central America, informing us about the situation of those countries affected by Hurricane Stan.

“The situation is very dramatic for our people in both Mexico and Central America because of Hurricane Stan. Here in Guatemala, the situation is chaotic in various Departments of the country, entire communities have disappeared under tons of earth, which supposes many deaths, above all around the great Lake of Panajachel in Sololá. The same fate has struck other places like San Marcos, Quetzaltenango, Huehuetenango, Puerto San José, where the Daughters of Charity work, etc. In El Salvador, we have refugees in our house of the former seminary in San Jacinto. The confreres and sisters are working together in this emergency, with the help of Favi. In the rest of the province, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama, the effects are minimal.”
