[22/08/2005]
As Patricia de Nava demonstrated it recently, in her capacity as Doctor Honoris Causa of the Catholic University of Louvain (Prize granted to her when she was AIC President in 2002), she signed an appeal on 19 May 2005 to put an end to violence towards the Burmese opponent Aung San Sun Sun Kyi. This open letter to Burmese authorities was published in the International Herald Tribune dated 18-19 June. The fight of this woman for democracy and for ending totalitarian regime in her country, reminds us of the fight of the 3 Mirabal sisters in the Dominican Republic. The 25th of November, day of their assassination by the dictator Trujillo, has been institutionalized by the United Nations as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
