“The future of humanity lies in the hands of those who are strong enough to provide coming generations with reasons for living and hoping.” This quote from Gaudium et Spes provides a thematic thrust to the presentations for the 4th biennial conference of the Chair. In this 40th anniversary year of the publication of Gaudium et Spes, we examine the “signs of the times” and celebrate “signs of hope.”

Since 1994, the Vincentian Chair of Social Justice has convened academics, practitioners, church leaders and policy makers to explore perspectives on poverty and Catholic social thought to move beyond problem analysis to personal and systemic solutions. The theme of this Conference culminates a two-year focus of the Vincentian Chair of Social Justice Lectures of 2004 and 2005, “Toward a Civilization of Love and Justice” by S. Evelyn Franc, DC and “A Passion for Justice” by Rev. Gregory Gay, CM,
