Fair Trade coffee is an “alternative (that) IMPROVES THE LIVES of participating farmers by
ensuring a fair price for their coffee. The $1.26 per pound paid
directly to the farmer?s cooperative more than covers the cost of
production, leaving additional income that can be put towards education
for children, health care, proper food and housing.”

Usually farmers get about 51 cents per pound which does NOT help them
even meet production costs, making them sell at a loss and go deeper
into debt. Therefore, you are really helping someone when you buy not
just coffee but a product with the Fair Trade certified symbol (seen in the link below).

This campaign is being picked up by student organizations at many colleges in the US including St. John’s University.
