Canberra Times (Australia), Friday, November 21, 2003 — The Australian Government was urged yesterday to contribute to the Global Fund to Fight HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. External affairs director for the fund Christoph Benn said in Canberra that Australia was the only wealthy country not committed to the fund.
The fund was an initiative of the United Nations and already had promises of $US2.10 million to fight infection in 121 countries. Dr Benn said the Australian Government had been suspicious that insufficient funds would be invested in its region.
