Five years after the launch of Roll Back Malaria (RBM) in 1998, this groundbreaking health initiative has matured into a functional global partnership of governments, civil society and non-governmental organizations, research institutions, professional associations, UN and development agencies, development banks, the private sector and the media.
RBM’s initial phase (1998-mid 2002) succeeded in raising global awareness of malaria, generating increased resources, and achieving consensus on the priority interventions required to fight the disease.

The challenge for the second five-year phase is to keep up the momentum and significantly reduce the global burden of malaria by supporting the scaling up of endemic countries’ prevention and control efforts. To ensure effective support, an external evaluation was commissioned and led to the implementation of significant changes to improve the effectiveness of the Partnership:
* An RBM Partnership Board has been established to coordinate the work of the partners, expand their number, and commission evaluations of RBM activities and their impact;

* Former Malian Health Minister Dr Fatoumata Nafo-Traoré has been appointed to the new position of Executive Secretary of the RBM Partnership;
* A new management structure for the RBM Secretariat has been put into place, with the Partnership Secretariat and the WHO Malaria Control Department each implementing distinct workplans and budgets. Although the Partnership Secretariat will continue to be hosted by WHO, the Executive Secretary
