The 3,000 invited guests, who ordinarily live in shelters run by the Missionaries of Charity, will be served lunch in the Paul VI auditorium at the Vatican, after the beatification ceremonies that Sunday morning.
Organizers of the beatification ceremony have also reserved several hundred seats in the front rows for homeless people, in deference to Mother Teresa’s desire to serve “the poorest of the poor.”
The Missionaries of Charity run two shelters for the homeless in Rome, including one at the Vatican which was donated by Pope John Paul in 1989. The Case dono di Maria serves several hundred of Rome’s poor every day.
